The Fennec Fox's native habitat is the North African deserts, they live under brush roots and rocks. They live in larger groups in their extensive tunnel systems that they form under rocks and root systems. Their tunnels will usually have several entrances, and are used as shelter from weather and other predators. Their burrows are normally lined with soft things such as fur and feathers. They live in the same environment as beetles, bugs, small rodents, lizards, some birds, as well as plants and bushes and because of this they are oppertunistic feeders and will feed on almost anything, they weigh less than 5 pounds and are at the largest 2 feet in length.
The fennec fox is nocturnal, it sleeps in a burrow during the day due to the very warm, their most obvious adaptation is their ears, these ears can grow up to 6 inches long these are large so that there is extra surface area on the body so that heat can be dispersed. This allows them to keep cool on the hot desert days these ears also however allow them to listen for rodents and bugs underground for their food.
The Fennec fox have thick, sand coloured fur that reflects the sunlight and keeps them cool when they have to go out in the daytime. This fur covers the bottoms of their feet, which prevents the hot sand burning their little toes. The fur on their soles also provides more traction so they can easily run on loose sand and quickly dig their burrows.
The Fennec fox has a thick coat, this is beneficial to them on the cold nights in their environment, it also has adapted like so many other desert animals to go a while without water as there is not much water available to them in theses environments.
